Planting Tips

Okay, I just bought some plant starts. Now what?

Before Planting
  • Most herbs and flowers grow best in well drained sandy loam with plenty of organic compost located in full sun or partial shade.
  • Basil requires heat so choose a warm south facing location shielded from the wind, or consider growing indoors in a container next to a sunny window.
  • Prepare your planting bed by loosening (not turning) the soil to at least 12” and adding approximately 1” of good compost.
  • Herbs can also be grown successfully in large pots and containers. If you are using containers, mix ½ sandy loam soil and ½ quality organic planting mix and top with approximately ½“ of compost. Make sure your container has drainage holes.
  • If you can't plant your starts right away, store them in partial shade and water daily to keep the soil moist.

Planting Steps

  1. Before planting make sure your soil is watered deeply several inches down and evenly moist, but not soggy.
  2. Dig a hole where you want to plant your new start. The hole should be slightly larger than the "root ball".
  3. Planting into dry soil can kill your new starts!
  4. Gently place your palm over the pot opening letting the plant stalk poke through your slightly spread fingers. Carefully remove the plant from the pot into your palm by tipping it upside down while rotating your hand upward.
  5. For "eco" cardboard pots we recommend that you keep the pot upright and peel away the sides/bottom to reveal the root ball (wet the cardboard first to make it easier).
  6. Carefully flip the plant over and place it upright into the hole. Fill the gaps around the edges with soil. Tamp the soil down but do not compress.
  7. Water the new plant deeply.
  8. To minimize transplant shock, apply liquid kelp (2T/gal of water).
  9. If your area is particularly cold, foggy and/or windy protect your new plant with shade net or row cover for a few days after transplanting.
With veggie starts (as opposed to herb starts) it's best to carefully separate the individual seedlings from the starts pot and plant them spaced them out -- typically 6-12 inches apart depending on the mature plant size.

After Planting
  • Water your herbs and flowers when they need it. Water when soil is "crumbly", but not completely dry. Herbs are generally very "water wise". Avoid overwatering.
  • Basil requires more water than most herbs.
  • Add compost and/or fertilizer to the base of your plants every few weeks, and water.
  • After your plant gets bigger you may harvest by taking clippings using small scissors.
  • Enjoy cooking with fresh herbs and flowers!
